WILMINGTON, DE: The men's soccer team finished their 2009 season one game from the top of the mountain, as they fell in the CACC Tournament Final Saturday afternoon to the Warriors of Nyack College 1-0 in Wilmington.
The Deacons were able to fire 21 shots in the match, but Coach Falloon's squad couldn't find the back of the net, as the Warriors turned away several point-blank opportunities. In the end, it was a defensive breakdown that decided the match, with the lone goal of the match coming in the latter stages of the first half.
Erik Martinez streaked through the Bloomfield box, and headed a cross from Gavin Penny past Deacons keeper
Steven Alonso to give Nyack a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. The frantic efforts of the Deacons to try to tie the match went by the boards, ending their season a victory short of a CACC title.
"Regardless of the score, I'm proud of the way our team played today," head coach Peter-John Falloon said. "We made great strides as a program to get to this point. I know our players are upset, but I am very proud of them. Our season didn't start out the way we would have liked, but we stayed together, and ended in the CACC championship game. It's something our players should be very proud of."
