Caldwell Rallies Twice to Sweep Baseball
Bloomfield, NJ- Caldwell College twice rallied from late game deficits to sweep the Deacons in a doubleheader by scores of 17-5 & 11-5. The Deacons fall to 16-20 on the season and are now 13-8 in CACC play. Caldwell improves to 10-11 in the conference and 16-18 overall.
Caldwell held a 4-0 lead in game 1until the bottom of the fifth when Alex Sepulveda sent his first homerun of the season over the left field fence. The Deacons would wait til the bottom of the 7th to gain a 5-4 lead on 2 2-out, 2 rbi singles from Emilio Fernandez and Alberto Ruiz.
Caldwell would go ahead again the top of the 8th and put the game out of reach in the ninth. Alberto Ruiz, Chris Rosa, and Alex Sepulveda were all 2 for 4.
Caldwell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homerun, but Anderson Minyetty would hit a pitch down the right field line that cleared the fence to knot the game at 1. The Deacons added a 4 spot in the bottom of the third on a sac fly from Emilio Fernandez, an rbi single from Ricky Maldonado, and another rbi single from Kevin Lauranzon to lead 5-1.
BC held a 5-1 lead with 2 outs in the seventh and two runners on, but Caldwell drove back to back home runs to net the game at 5-5. Two defensive miscues in the 8th gave Caldwell the go ahead run, and they would tack 5 more insurance runs before winning 11-5.
Anderson Minyetty, Ricky Maldonado, and Kevin Lauranzon were each 2 for 4. Jon Walsh pitched 7 innings, allowing 5 earned and striking out 3.
The Deacons return to action this Tuesday when they host Post University at home for a single nine inning game.
