NEW HAVEN, CT (May 26, 2009) - The Bloomfield College men and Philadelphia University women have claimed the 2008-09 Alfred R. Restaino, Sr., Cups in an announcement made today by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Commissioner Dan Mara. The cups are given annually to the institutions that perform the best across the board in CACC-sponsored sports.
The point system used for the award takes into account each team's finish in both the CACC regular-season and conference tournament. Each school receives a combined point total, and that total is divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.
"We are excited about winning the commissioner’s cup here at Bloomfield College," says BC Athletic Director Sheila Wooten. "Since the cup is named after the former athletic director, Al Restaino, Sr., we felt a little pressure to win at least once. I’m proud of our coaches and our student athletes for a great year. It was truly a team effort."
Bloomfield (9.20) won the men's award by a very narrow margin over Philadelphia (9.08) after qualifying for the CACC Tournament in soccer, basketball, tennis and baseball.
The men's basketball team paved the way for BC sports in 2008-09 taking the regular season conference crown with a 15-1 record in CACC play. The men fell in the championship round of the CACC tournament but ended the season with a stellar 23-7 record.
The baseball team had an outstanding turnaround from 2008 when they finished 8th in the CACC, to a 15-12 CACC record and a 2nd place seed in the post-season tournament. It was the Deacons first post-season appearance since 2006.
The men's soccer team went from a 3-12-3 season in 2007, to a 3rd place finish in the conference and a 10-7-1 overall record. The Deacons finished with a 7-2-1 record in CACC play in '08.
The men's tennis team posted their best season in school history, winning 3 matches, and making their first ever appearance in the CACC men's tennis tournament.
