Waterbury, CT- For the first time since 2006 the Bloomfield College Baseball program is returning to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playofffs. The Deacons needed to win 2 of their final 4 games to secure a playoff bid, and defeated Philadelphia University on Saturday and Post on Sunday to advance to the post-season. BC will enter the tournament as the #2 seed and take on #3 Wilmington University this Thursday.
The Deacons fell in game 1 to Post yesterday by a score of 12-11, leaving them one more chance to gain a post-season birth with a victory in game 2.
BC would add all three of their runs on five consecutive singles in the fifth inning to break a 0-0 tie.
James Seck led off the inning with a single, and advanced to third on another single by
Jonattan Fernandez.
Anderson Minyetty gave the Deacons their third hit in a row to push across Seck and give the Deacons a 1-0 lead.
Emilio Fernandez then legged out a bunt single to load the bases for Rick Maldonado, who then singled in Fernandez and Minyetty to put the Deacons up 3-0.
Post would threaten in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of several BC miscues to make the score 3-2 BC with 1-out and the bases loaded. Head Coach Jeff Watson then called on BC senior
Ricky Maldonado to come in relief of
Jon Walsh for his first pitching appearance of the season. Maldonado induced a ground ball to Jonattan Fernandez who stepped on 2nd and threw to first for the double play, ending the inning and preserving the BC lead.
Maldonado sat Post down 1-2-3 in the 7th to give the Deacons their first post season birth since 2006 and the #2 seed in the CACC tournament.
Jon Walsh picks up the win, going 5 1/3 innings allowing 1 earned run and fanning 4. Ricky Maldonado earns his first save of the season, and went 7 for 9 in the double-header with 6 rbi's. Anderson Minyetty also went 5 for 8 on the day with 4 rbi's.
