Pearl River senior catcher Krystina Poloni, an incoming freshman this fall for Bloomfield College, was named Second Team High School All-American for the second straight year by the NFCA. Previously, she was also named First Team All New York State, Class A for the second straight year among other honors. Poloni led her Pearl River squad to a sectional championship and a regional championship this past year, hitting .481 as the team’s catcher.
Pearl River fell just one game short of winning an overall New York State Championship.
Polonia was one of just 50 high school softball players from across the country to earn All-America honors and was one of just 5 players from the Northeast to be honored with 1st or 2nd Team recognition. Besides LSU-bound pitcher Rachel Fico, Poloni was the only player from the Northeast to repeat on the 1st or 2nd Team.
A 2008 NFCA All-American, Poloni was pitched around for much of the season at Pearl River, but still managed 39 hits in 81 at bats. She had 13 multi-hit games in leading the Pirates to a 25-2 record this year. Poloni also scored 25 runs and had 19 RBI.
Poloni had many great games for the Pirates this year, but one performance that stood out was her game against Maine-Endwall in the New York State Regional Semi-Final. Poloni blasted a solo home run in the 4th inning against Hofstra-bound standout pitcher Nicole Osovsky to give Pearl River a 1-0 lead. She later drove in the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to give the Pirates the 2-0 win.
Also strong behind the plate, Poloni is expected to make an immediate impact on a Deacon lineup that is trying to replace the graduated bat of senior All-CACC performer Vickie Berardi. She joins fellow recruits Ashleigh Williams (Manassas, VA) and Ashton Corley (Escondido, CA) in what figures to be a strong recruiting class for BC.
