NEWARK, NJ - The baseball team improved to 8-30 overall and 4-14 in CACC play Wednesday afternoon, as they swept the Nyack College Warriors by scores of 1-0, and 8-4 at Westside Park.

In the opener, righty Steve Godowski worked his way out of several jams over nine outstanding innings of work, striking out three and scattering eight Warriors hits in his complete-game shutout effort.  The Deacons were able to break through in the top of the seventh inning, when second baseman Edgardo Fernandez doubled off the left-centerfield wall to leadoff the frame.  Sean Stimpfel advanced Fernandez to third with a ground out, and Fernandez scored on a passed ball to put the Deacons on top 1-0.  Godowski would shut the Warriors down the rest of the way, preserving the one-run victory and ending the Deacons' 11-game losing streak.

Bloomfield tallied five hits in the victory.  Alberto Ruiz, Anthony Addone, Mike Monaco Chris Rosa and Fernandez each posted a hit for BC in the win.

Box Score

In game two, the Deacons were able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Addone plated Emilio Fernandez with an RBI triple to get things started, and Ruiz followed with an RBI single to give the Deacons a pair of runs early.  The Warriors would get an unearned run back in the bottom of the inning of Deacons' hurler Brad Smith, but couldn't draw even in their first trip to the plate.

BC widened the gap to 3-1 in the top of the second, when Rosa scored on a passed ball with two outs in the frame.  But the Warriors would rally for a three-run second off Smith, taking the lead at 4-3 through the first two innings of play.

The Deacons would counter with two runs in the top of the third, when Stimpfel crushed a double into the right-centerfield gap, scoring a pair of runs and giving Coach Watson's club a one-run cushion.  It would be a lead they would not relinquish, as Smith shut the Warriors down the rest of the way in a complete-game effort.  Smith yielded two earned runs overall on six hits, while walking just a single hitter.

Bloomfield widened the gap with runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings to ice the series sweep.  Edgardo Fernandez drove home Ruiz with an RBI double in the fifth, and Edwin Pagan plated Stimpfel with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to drive in his team-leading 16'th run of the season.  Pagan later scored in the ninth inning, taking two bases on a passed ball to move the lead to 8-4.

Emilio Fernandez finished the game going 3-5, while Stimpfel finished 2-4 with a pair of RBIs.  Ruiz and Edgardo Fernandez each smacked a pair of hits apiece in the victory.

The team returns to action Friday, April 23 with a non-conference road game against Pace University.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
