QUEENS, NY - The baseball team improved to 9-32 on the season Saturday afternoon, as they took the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with Queens College by a 2-1 margin in 11 innings.
In game one, junior righty
Louis Castillo was rock-solid over six innings of work, yielding two runs with one earned and walking just a single hitter. The Knights scratched out an earned run in the fourth inning, and pushed an unearned run across in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Deacons saw four runners reach scoring position over the nine-inning affair, but the offensive couldn't come up with the timely hit that could get the club on the board. The bullpen duo of
Edwin Cruz and
John Whitley held the Knights down after Castillo's exit, but Queens was able to keep the Deacons off the scoreboard and preserve a 2-0 game one victory.
Edgardo Fernandez,
Alberto Ruiz,
Jose Lebron,
Anderson Minyetty and
Mike Monaco each posted hits for the Deacons in the loss.
In game two, junior southpaw
Sean Stimpfel continued his outstanding work on the mound, going seven innings while surrendering a single earned run and walking one. The Knights were able to scratch out a run off Stimpfel in the bottom of the first, but the Deacons quickly answered in the top of the second, when Minyetty drew a bases-loaded walk that scored
Delroy Cox, who'd walked to lead off the frame.
The zeros would pile up from there, as both starters settled in to shut down the clubs' offensive attacks. What was set to be a seven-inning affair reached extra innings, with the game now in the hands of the squads' bullpens. The Deacons' arms proved up to the task of keeping the Knights at a single run, with righty Dave Ricci coming on to toss four innings of hitless baseball to keep BC in the game.
Bloomfield was able to finally break through in the top of the eleventh, when Lebron drew a one-out walk. The shortstop then stole second, and after a flyout by Cox, first baseman
Anthony Fratto gave the Deacons the lead with a two-out single. Lebron snuck in just ahead of the tag at the plate, giving the club a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Ricci would nail down the win with a 1-2-3 eleventh inning, earning Coach Watson's club a split of the day's games.
Ruiz finished the second game going 2-5, while Minyetty, Lebron, and Cox also added hits in the victory.
The team returns to action Tuesday, April 27 with a road game against Nyack College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
