NYACK, NY - The baseball team fell to 9-33 on the season Wednesday evening, as they dropped a non-conference road decision to the Nyack College Warriors by a 3-2 margin.
Right-hander
Steve Godowski faced the Warriors for the third time this season, and once again put forth a tremendous performance on the mound. The Warriors were able to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, notching three straight singles to gain the early lead. But Godowski would settle in from there, allowing just a single earned run over his final six innings of work while striking out nine Nyack hitters.
The Deacons were able to able to cut the deficit in half in the top of the third, when
Emilio Fernandez plated
Christian Rosa, who'd singled to lead off the inning, with a sacrifice fly. First baseman
Sean Stimpfel was able to draw the Deacons even in the top of the sixth, when he drove home
Edgardo Fernandez with a two-our RBI single.
But the Warriors would scratch out one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single, putting the Deacons down a run at 3-2 with two turns to the plate left. It seemed as if Coach Watson's club would able to knot the score at three in the top of the ninth, after Stimpfel led off the frame by crushing a triple into the right-centerfield gap. But the offense could not push the tying run across, and the Warriors held on to preserve the one-run victory and earn a split of the season series.
Stimpfel finished the day going 2-4 in the loss, while designated hitter
Delroy Cox, Rosa and
Mike Monaco each notched base hits for the Deacons.
The team returns to action Friday, April 30 with a non-conference home game against Concordia College. Senior Night festivities will take place begining at 6:45, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM.
