BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The baseball team fell to 9-34 on the season Friday night, as they dropped a non-conference home game to the Concordia College Clippers by a 15-6 margin at Wright's Field.
Prior to the game, the program honored its seven seniors -
Matt Snyder,
Edwin Pagan,
Jose Lebron,
Manny Lopez,
Jon Walsh Delroy Cox and
Lou Guzman - with a ceremony highlighting their tremendous accomplishments as four-year members of Deacons baseball. When the festivities came to a close, it was time for Walsh take the mound the final start of his Bloomfield career.
The Deacons fell behind 3-0 after the top of the first, but the senior-laden lineup quickly knotted the score at three after the first two innings of play. Lebron plated
Alberto Ruiz with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and the squad was able to produce two more runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score at three runs apiece. Walsh led off the inning with a walk, and Snyder followed with a single through the left side to start the rally. Catcher
Joe Knazek then walked to load the bases, and Lopez drove Walsh in with a Fielder's Choice to bring the Deacons to within a run. Ruiz then followed two hitters later with an RBI single of his own, bringing the Deacons even through the first three innings of play.
After a three-run fourth by the Concorida, the Deacons countered with a three-run frame of their own in which eight men came to the plate. Lebron and Guzman got things by reaching base, and Snyder drove home a run with a Fielder's Choice. Guzman then scored on a passed ball, drawing the Deacons to within a run, and Pagan knotted the score at six runs apiece with a Fielder's Choice that scored Snyder.
The score remained tied until the top of the seventh, when Concordia was able to push three runs across to take a 9-6 lead. They were able to notch five more runs in their final two trips to the plate, pulling away to earn the 15-6 victory.
Knazek finished the night going 2-3 in the loss, while Ruiz, Cox, Lebron, and Snyder notched base hits in the setback.
The team returns to action Sunday, May 2 with a doubleheader against Concordia. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
